Day 43

Liquid Glass

These are the lesson notes for this day. Its build-along tutorial and flash cards have not been written yet.

Lesson 49

Liquid Glass

Liquid Glass is the design language Apple introduced in iOS 26. It is a translucent material used for navigation bars, tab bars, toolbars, sheets, and controls, which float above your content and bend the light from whatever is behind them. An app that uses the standard SwiftUI components gets it automatically when it is rebuilt with the current SDK. iOS 27 refines the appearance, with no code changes needed.

For floating controls of your own: apply .glassEffect(). Put glass elements that sit near each other inside a GlassEffectContainer so that they blend and morph together. Use glassEffectID to animate between them, and .buttonStyle(.glass) for buttons. Use glass for controls that sit above content. Do not use it for the content itself.

Exercise

Rebuild your app against the iOS 27 SDK and look over every custom bar and control. Add one floating cluster of actions using a GlassEffectContainer.

After this lesson you should be able to answer
  1. What do you have to do for standard bars and controls to adopt Liquid Glass?
  2. What is GlassEffectContainer for?
  3. Where should you not use glass?
